North Sea Beach Marathon 2008 – also with ‘Open Harbour Day’

This unique event, run on sand, takes place for the 9th time on Sunday 29th June

At 10.30 a.m. on the last Sunday in June, when the start gun sounds at Vejers Nordstrand for the marathon runners, it will mark the start of a very special running event, with the finishing line for all participants at Hvide Sande. In the town of Hvide Sande itself, a special effort is being made to create an exciting and eventful weekend. From the 27th to the 29th June it is ‘Open Harbour Day’ in and around the Port, giving visitors the opportunity to see inside the various dockside workshops and businesses, to step onboard fishing boats, visit the lifeboat station, and to view the sluice gate machinery, says run manager Bjarne Elmertoft. Volley ball nets have already been set up on the beach, and the company myKayak.dk in Hvide Sande is offering surf kayaking sessions from the beach, between 1.00 and 4.00 p.m. on the day of the Marathon. The price for ¾ hour, including introduction and equipment is Dkr 75,- per person. On the beach there will also be offers on various wellness treatments, together with different sorts of entertainment for both adults and children.

Interest from abroad

Yet again the North Sea Beach Marathon has experienced significant interest from foreign runners from both near and far. Foreign journalists have also shown interest in the unique event – we have been contacted by a Welsh TV company who are working for the International Association of Athletics Federations, (IAAF). They will be reporting on the run, and on the ordinary enthusiasts who have the courage to attempt the marathon distance, says Bjarne Elmertoft.

North Sea Beach Marathon 2008 will as usual take place along the West Coast of Jutland, and includes a marathon (42.195 km), half-marathon (21.097 km), 10 and 5 km races, and also Nordic Walking for the last three distances. This year marathon runners will start from Vejers Nordstrand, half-marathon runners from Nymindegab, while the 5 and 10 km events are ‘out and back’ routes starting from Hvide Sande, which is also the finishing point for participants in all events.

North Sea Beach Marathon is a unique running event, organised by three clubs, Ringkøbing Athletics & Running Club, Esbjerg Athletics & Running Club, and Hvide Sande YMCA Sports club, together with a number of local partners.

In 2007 there were 1900 registered participants in the four different distances.

When the start gun sounds at Vejers Nordstrand, at 10.30 a.m. on the last Sunday in June, it will mark the start of a very special running event. “A world class beach marathon – We are expecting up to 2000 participants this year for this very special event,” says Bjarne Elmertoft, run manager. As usual there is great interest both from Denmark and abroad, and this year there have been enquiries from runners from countries such as Morocco, Ethiopia and India. Last year there were runners from 19 nations, so clearly, the North Sea Beach Marathon has become an international event. We have also learnt that three journalists from South Africa will be attending this year, and additionally we expect to see more Kenyan runners on the 2008 start line. North Sea Beach Marathon has also entered into a co-operation with the Budapest Marathon, with links to both events on each other’s web sites. We take all this as proof that our event is becoming known amongst runners internationally, says Bjarne Elmertoft.

New Sponsors

North Sea Beach Marathon, together with our main sponsor Ringkjøbing Bank, is offering a main prize of 11,000 Danish Kroner to the winner of the Marathon. The event also has sponsorship agreements with Sparekassen for Nørre Nebel and Region, bottled water suppliers Aqua d’or, New Balance, and the energy drink producer Maxim. North Sea Beach Marathon will also welcome www.loebeshop.dk, who amongst other things will be offering prizes for the fastest times in the 5 and 10 km races. Start numbers of all who have pre-registered will also be entered into a draw for many fine prizes.
